Busy Week: Fahrenkamp Lunch, Borough Budget, and More
It’s Friday! What a week.
If you’re reading this by noon today, there’s a Fahrenkamp Lunch happening at 12pm with the wonderful Matt Acuña Buxton.
After a brief hiatus, this lunchtime speaker series returns at noon on Friday, May 12 with a new coordinator (me!). A longtime event held by the Interior Democrats, the series is free and open to the public and takes place over Zoom.
Past speakers include senators, university presidents, community leaders, and more.
Matt has been covering Alaskan politics for over a decade. He writes the popular The Alaska Memo newsletter and contributes analysis and commentary to The Alaska Current (formerly the Midnight Sun).
A past political correspondent for the Daily News Miner, Matt’s newsletter provides an insightful look into the complicated workings of our state legislature.
We hope you can join us for lunch and a chat with Matt!
Friday, May 12 at noon AK.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Budget
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly met yesterday to vote on the Borough’s budget.
Fingers crossed the legislature follows through with some sort of education funding.
More on the budget next week.
High School Track and Field Keeping Me Busy
High school track and field has kept me pretty occupied lately, hence less newsletters this week.
It takes a good 50-60 volunteer officials, not to mention coaches, athletes, and admin, to make these final meets work.
If you’d like to help, we could still use it! Interested parties can fill out this quick google form and I’ll be in touch. No experience necessary. Please let me know at kuba@runningclubnorth.org if you have any questions about volunteering.
The remaining meets are:
Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13, at the West Valley Track
Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20, at the West Valley Track
Lots of perks like free food, fun, and feeling very rewarding! More info available on the google form.
Fireweed Fairbanks had a Party!
The Fairbanks Hub of Fireweed collective had a party yesterday! About 50 or so young people came through Venue, and we chatted about our ongoing policy platform, talked with some current and prospective candidates, made art, and had plenty of good food.
Hub meeting on Wednesday, May 24. More coming soon.
If you’re between the ages of 18-35 and would like to get involved, please let me know!
New Store Opens this Weekend
It’s always wonderful when a new, local business opens up.
From their Facebook page:
You're invited to celebrate downtown Fairbanks' newest shopping experience: Lichen. Located on 3rd and Cushman, Lichen offers the finest homewares, local artwork, apparel, and more.
Live intentionally. Curated to bring simplicity, style, and beauty into your home, immerse yourself in Lichen's modern aesthetic while enjoying a unique brick + mortar shop like Fairbanks has never seen before.
Open 11-7 Tuesday-Sunday
301 Cushman Street, in downtown Fairbanks
And, they are opening just in time for Mother’s Day (which is this Sunday, May 14).
Today’s post is short and sweet!
Thanks for reading, and hope everyone has a chance to get outside this weekend.
